History

Due to Kris's age, much of his story is split into several arcs with their own titles. MSQ doesn't begin until he's 125.

Pre-MSQ

Golmore Prelude

Eir was born in a small village in a very remote part of Golmore Jungle. He didn't know his parents—in the village, everyone worked together to raise the kits, and traditional familial bonds were not made.

There's a lot of surrounding info about the village, but adding it all here would make this section difficult to parse, so here is a Tumblr post that goes more in-depth.

The only other Viera at his age was Reyna, and they became fast friends. When Eir and Reyna came of age and learned they were male, they were taken by one of the males in the village to learn to be a Wood Warder. Eir did not take to the training well–not only did he have difficulty hearing the Green Word compared to his peers, but his only martial skill appeared to be with the bow.

However, while the elders of the village disapproved of Eir becoming a Wood Warder, the lack of males in general (let alone those young enough to protect the forest and help produce offspring) made it so that he became a Wood Warder regardless–Djt-Bidit, Wood Warder of the Heavenly Wind.

As such, Eir protected the forest for decades, though the village wasn't shy in showing its displeasure with him. One day, intruders entered the forest and happened upon Eir and Reyna. In a moment of weakness, Eir lets one of the younger soldiers go—strictly against the village's laws.

Reyna, sensing this would give the elders an excuse to dispatch Eir, takes the blame for the incident and is exiled from the village. Once Eir learns of this, he leaves to search for him, eventually making his way to Dalmasca.

Dalmascan Requiem
Upon eventually making it to Rabanastre, Eir chooses a new name for himself—Gale—and sets out to find his friend. He finds the culture of Dalmasca and Rabanastre vastly different from his tiny village, but despite that, Gale fit into this new society well. In his search for Reyna–whom he learned changed his name to Laurent–Gale learned a lot about gathering useful information and selling it, and made a living that way.

However, Laurent proved hard to track down, but after a few years, a chance meeting with Gemna, an elderly Bangaa bartender, gave Gale what he needed to track Laurent down.

Finally reunited, Gale offers Laurent the best job he could think of to keep his friend safe and close—becoming an assassin. Wood Warder training lent well to the profession, and being more in the shadows would keep him from making as many enemies… and Gale's wealth of information means there was no shortage of targets.

Laurent agrees, and Gemna takes both of them under her wing and mentors them in the ways of espionage. The two Viera made a good team, and they were able to carve out a good living in the underbelly of Rabanastre. Eventually, Gale realizes his feelings for Laurent are more than platonic, and when the other confessed, they started a relationship.

After about a decade, Gemna passes peacefully of old age, and the boys decide to take over running the bar, leaving the assassin life behind. However, it doesn't take long to learn the truth about their late mentor–that she was a member of the Saraab, a unit of Dalmascan peacekeepers that work in the shadows to keep the kingdom safe, via any means necessary.

Upon learning this, the two agree to join the Saraab and assist when necessary in exchange for their past crimes being forgiven. As such, their lives continued in this way, gathering information for the Saraab and occasionally taking jobs from them, until the Garleans invaded.

Lente's Rondo
When the Garleans take over Dalmasca, the two join the Resistance. As Gale wasn't much of a fighter, he learned how to become a field medic. He learns a fair amount of first aid and some basic conjury during these years.

1.0

Lente's Rondo
On the day of the Calamity, Gale awakened to the Echo after having a dream about the Final Days as Azem. In addition to looking into people's pasts, he also gains enhanced physical and magical strength—a gift from Hydaelyn to better defend himself.

Gale wasn't sure what the source of the visions and newfound strength came from, eventually deciding it was an 'affliction' he was suffering from.

The visions and dreams became more frequent until one day, about five years later, when the Echo came to him on the battlefield, nearly killing him. Gale decides he needs to heed the dreams to 'go to Eorzea' and figure out what's wrong with him. He deserts the army (and leaves Laurent) and goes to Ul'dah, not letting anyone know of his plans.

A Realm Reborn

Light's Overture
Upon arriving in Ul'dah, Gale changes his looks and signs up for the Adventurer's Guild as Kris. He worries that the army may come looking for him, and as such, he tries to blend in as a random adventurer instead of a soldier.

He keeps this charade up for several years, as the worry of the army finding him is replaced with a fear of his enemies learning of his past and loved ones, and harming them to get to him.

(The rest of 2.0 MSQ plays out as normal)

After Eorzea is saved, Kris helps Cid and NOAH explore the Crystal Tower. This takes up most of his time from 2.1 to 2.5, so he is not around for the Crystal Braves storyline and realizes what's happening too late.

Heavensward

Shadow's Elegy
(Much of 3.0 plays out the same as MSQ–so this entry will pick up from after the events of The Vault.)

Burdened by Haurchefant's death and aimlessly wandering the streets of Ishgard, Kris overhears a story of a Dark Knight fighting and falling in (whatever the fight to the death is called). Disgusted by how the Ishgardians handled the knight's body, he heads to the Brume to find it and give the person a proper burial.

When it finds the body, however, he's overcome with a splitting headache, and when the pain passes, he finds that the Dark Knight was alive after all, and they introduce themselves as Fray.

Fray trains Kris in the ways of the Dark Knight. He does realize early on that this mentor isn't exactly the person whose corpse he saw in the Brume, but some odd fusion of the departed memories and his feelings of resentment and helplessness. But the reality is that Kris doesn't care all that much, so long as it gets him the power he needs to protect people—and make his enemies pay.

When confronted by Ishgardian knights about his powers and 'talking to a corpse in the Brume', Kris realizes just how far gone he was, and confronts Fray (or rather, himself), snapping out of his fugue.

(Aside from some small details, the remainder of 3.0 and HW patches play out the same.)

Stormblood

Shadow's Harmony
(Pretty much all of 4.0's MSQ plays out as it does in-game—the only notes to speak of is that Stormblood takes two years, and Kris goes through the level 61-70 and 80 DRK quests before the next arc.)

Lente's Hymn
(While the Bozjan storyline is post-ShB content, for character development reasons this is now a post-SB storyline)

Shortly after Doma and Ala Mhigo are liberated, Kris gets a request for help from the Bozjan Resistance. He's reluctant to help–between past dealings with the group and being close to Dalmasca, he worries that his past will be brought to light. However, Kris knows refusing would raise more questions than answers and agrees to help.

His worst fears quickly come true, however, as his partner is asked to go to Bozja as a representative of the Dalmascan Resistance. Their reunion is not a happy one, full of hurt feelings and mixed emotions, but the two are forced to work together while on the field to help liberate Bozja.

As time goes on, the two eventually come to terms with the last four years and how Kris's disappearance and becoming WoL affected them, and after Bozja is liberated, they begin to reconcile.

(The overarching Bozja storyline is pretty much the same—just the timing is different, and the relic weapon part of the storyline is wrapped up almost immediately.)

Tempestuous Rubato
For a short time after Lente's Hymn, the WoL is on a 'vacation' of sorts to repair his relationship with Laurent. They spend much of their time in Kugane, though Kris also introduces his partner to the Scions at this time.

(It's a break of sorts in the canon story, as the arc doesn't really fit in the arcs before and after it. Once the Scions start falling into comas, the rest of the post-SB patch story plays out the same.)

Shadowbringers

Light's Etude
When Kris goes to the Crystal Tower and is pulled into the First, something goes wrong. He loses not only his connection with Fray but also his Echo, leaving him severely weakened when he arrives on the First. This forces him to adapt, and he learns Red Magic from Alisaie to fight. He picks this up extremely quickly.

Kris also realizes who the Exarch is relatively on, but when the Exarch deflects his hints, he doesn't push it.

(5.0 and patch content is the same as in-game MSQ. 5.0-5.3 takes about a year on the First, but it's only a couple months at most on the Source.)

While Kris doesn't suffer any physical consequences of the Light poisoning, it does permanently misbalance his aether towards Light/White Magic, making the balancing act of Red Magic more difficult to achieve. He does not continue being a Red Mage after this point.

Endwalker

Despair's Coda
(Kris's 6.0 story is more or less the same as MSQ.)

Hope's Capriccio
After the final battle of Endwalker, Kris is badly injured, and it takes him several months to recover. During this time, he and Laurent get engaged and married, though he doesn't use Laurent's last name until post-MSQ (to prevent people from making the connection between them and the 'Warrior of Light').

Also during this time, Kris fully leans into being a Bard, and moves away from being a Dark Knight. This push was already happening post-ShB and during EW, but at this point he is done being on the frontlines and lets other people take the lead while he offers support.

About 10 months after the end of Endwalker, the post-EW patch story begins. Kris helps to save Azdaja from the Thirteenth, but in general, his feelings of being a hero are conflicted. At this point, the resistance to tempering isn't unique to people with the Echo anymore; so beyond the first few tests, he feels he's not needed. However, he does feel for Vrtra and Azdaja and decides to help based on that.

When Wuk Lamat comes from Tural to ask for Kris's and the Students of Baldesion's help, he rejects her. He does not want to get involved with a rite of succession of another country that wouldn't ask for his help if he wasn't the Warrior of Light.

However, he does notice Laurent's interest in Tural (though not necessarily for the rite of succession itself), and he works with the Students of Baldesion to convince his husband to go, even if he decides not to back Wuk Lamat later.

Dawntrail

Turali Bachata
During the events of Dawntrail, Kris takes a backseat to the plot, mainly supporting Laurent. He participates at times in the rite of succession but is not present for the whole time. Once the rite ends, Kris accompanies Erenville to visit his home so he sees Alexandria invading firsthand.

After the invasion, he stays behind in Tuliyollal, but not before giving Laurent his Azem Crystal as 'a lucky charm'. Kris comes into the dome with the remaining Scions during the showdown with Zoraal Ja, and accompanies the group to Living Memory.

Kris does not enter Sphene's final memories and opts to guard Erenville instead (besides, given his track record with technology, it was hard to predict the outcome of uploading him anyway). When things go awry, Kris inadvertently activates the crystal that's still on Laurent's person, giving him the backup needed to defeat Queen Eternal.

While Laurent handles the main patch storyline, Kris participates in the Arcadion to help free the souls being used there. I have an additional write-up to go over all that.

Post-MSQ

Zephyr's Cadence
After the events of MSQ, Kris returns to Rabanastre and helps with the rebuilding efforts. After Laurent earns his Archon mark, they move into the old bar and repurpose it into a flower shop (a rather unique choice for a desert city).

I go a lot more in-depth about the beginning of post-MSQ for the boys in this Tumblr post.

They also give Alisae the Azem Stone, effectively passing the legacy of the Warrior of Light to her, and effectively live out their days in a quiet peace.

When the two are around 200, they adopt a young Hrothgar girl named Katerina, and they adore her to pieces. :)
