- excerpt from a letter

Born Petra Atoel, one of a total of six children, Petra was raised in a small Viera village on the island of Cape Mete. She is the fourth daughter of a wood warder and village leader, and is one half of a set of twins. Unlike most Vieran childhoods where seeing a non-Viera was a rarity, the (relatively) small size of the island was conducive to her community interacting with the other settlements - including the bustling port - albeit reluctantly. Thus she was exposed to other peoples and mindsets that made her very well-rounded from a relatively young age. However, this still did not mean a break from the Green Word, no matter how modified. Going into the town was only to happen when it was a necessity and not for fun, and even then her parents hated it.

Her upbringing was both strict and detached - a mother who was a village leader and thus an example, and a wood warder father who, while they spent time together, was always distant. Petra was for all intents and purposes raised by her eldest sisters Ysera and Fidona alongside her twin Mydia and younger siblings Siat and Rena. She received a standard Viera education; survival and combat skills, domestic skills, everything that she’d need to protect the village and be a productive member of it. Despite this, Petra had become enamored with the port town and what she believed to be the interesting lives of the townspeople and the sailors, free to do whatever and go anywhere they wished. Both she and her sister were notorious for being found at the inns that they were just a little too young to be in flirting with the sailors and travelers that had stopped to rest.

However as she grew older, Petra became more and more restless and adventurous. The bustle nearby port town - and by extension the allure and false promises of the sailors who would come and go - fueled her desire to leave her village, and that decision would put her at odds with the rest of her family. The night that she decided to leave Petra found herself in a heated argument with her parents, especially her mother. It ended with her being thrown out of her family’s home, and effectively disowned. Now truly free of the Green Word, her village, and most of her family, Petra at the age of twenty left for Eorzea with only Mydia coming to the docks to tearfully see her off.

After sailing for nearly two weeks, Petra landed in Limsa Lominsa. Tired and now totally out of her depth after being abandoned at the docks by the sailor she’d been enamored with, she was lost in a new and unfamiliar city. Luckily she had been spotted by a kind Miqo’te girl who helped her get set up with an inn room, and introduced her to Baderon at the Drowning Wench. Grateful, and in Viera city name fashion, Petra took the girl’s name Lanbattal as her own.

Taking up her lyre and singing in inns to make enough gil to survive on, Petra was quickly scouted and recruited by the The Order of the Twin Adder as part of an initiative to revive their languishing ranks of Bards. This eventually sent her to the Cartenau Flats and the activation of her Echo as she witnessed the fall of Dalamud and the emergence of Bahamut. Wrestling with her suddenly newfound and, at the time, overwhelming new ability to master languages, Petra spent the next five years adventuring and further honing her skills.

A Realm Reborn

“You really wouldn't believe it, Myds. The port here - it's so much bigger than the one in [Assumed to be a city name. It is no longer legible and covered in a large ink smudge, due to water damage] - there's so many people, so much sound, and so much going on. And I miss you and Rena dearly, I know you two would find it just as exciting as I do. But I can't come home. I won't.”

Heavensward

“-and I hate it! Even inside you can't escape the cold, two bowls of soup and sitting by the fire has done nothing to warm me up. It… it seeps into your bones, almost, and never lets go. The people themselves are cold - maybe all the damn snow’s gotten to their heads. Except the Lord Commander. And Myds - don't you dare say you've heard me say this before, because whenever I said it last I didn't mean it - but I swear, we looked at each other once -”

Shadowbringers

“I've thrown this letter away and started it over more times than I can count. There's something wrong with me. There has to be. I've never seen Y'shtola look at me before the way she did a few days ago. Anger? Pity? I don't know, and no one will tell me anything - Urianger will hardly look me in the eye! But I know there's something wrong. …I dropped my bow the other day. You know as well as I that I do not do my weapon. It's like my hands, my fingers, are no longer part of me.”

Endwalker

“I’m scared. Well and truly scared. Scared that I’ll lose you before I return, scared I won’t return at all. Please. Please promise me that you’ll do everything in your power to be there when I get back. I’ll do everything I can to return to you quickly, and with good news, I hope. If I do come home, and if you are still there, I promise I won’t leave again. I promise. I even have a new song for you.”

Relationships

Family

  • Kelte Rehw-Marouc (PGL)
    • Petra's father. She saw him more often than most Viera see their fathers due to the small size of the island her village is located on. A quiet and stoic man, he would occasionally spend time with his children. As a Wood Warder he was never the best at interacting with any of his offspring however, so many of their interactions were, and still are, awkward to this day. A strict adherent to the Green Word, he was very disappointed in Petra for wanting to leave, and while he didn't fight or argue with her, he did make it clear that she would not be welcome back home without an apology and a commitment to staying for good. He and Petra still don't speak, nor does he occupy her thoughts often.
  • Veis Atoel (ARC)
    • Petra's mother. A high-strung and temperamental woman who was far busier tending to the political issues within the village as a leader than to her own children. Like her husband Veis is a strict adherent to the Green Word, and expects each of her children to fall in line and do the same. Her biggest involvement in Petra's upbringing was to teach her the skills to become an archer and then eventual bard. Veis was beyond displeased when Petra decided to leave their home village, and their argument was the loudest and most heated until Veis told her daughter to leave and never to return. Being away, Petra doesn't think about her mother much, if ever, since she was already so absent.
  • Ysera Atoel (WAR)
    • The oldest of all of Petra's siblings, and 12 years older than Petra. Ysera was the older sister Petra never really had, as she found her sister to be too rigid and no-nonsense in her daily life. They have never been close, and always cordial at best. Ysera left to learn her fighting discipline when Petra was about 6, so Ysera was very absent from Petra's life to begin with. Of all of her siblings, Ysera was the most disappointed and angry with Petra's decision to leave. She believed that not only she hadn't been a good enough example for her younger sister, but that Petra had never fit in with the family and village anyway. Petra believes her to be the least likely person in her family to reconcile with, minus their parents.
  • Fidona Atoel (LNC)
    • Petra's second to oldest sister, with a 5 year age difference. Fidona is more of a mother to Petra than their mother ever was, and Fidona was the one to begin training Petra to be a lancer. They were not and have never been close but they're friendly enough on a surface level that they can get along with each other in the same room without it being too awkward. Fidona understood Petra's reasoning to leave the village, but she also understood where her parents were coming from. With every other sibling taking a side, Fidona is the most neutral of the bunch.
  • Mydia Atoel (DNC)
    • Petra's twin, and older sister by about 10 minutes. Mydia and Petra have always been inseparable, and a lot of the adventures and trouble Petra got into while young was with her twin at her side. They have always had a friendly rivalry and competed for everything - accomplishments, boys, attention. Her sister was the first person that Petra confided in when she decided to leave the village, and the only person to see her off. Petra keeps in fairly constant contact with her twin, sending letters of her adventures as often as she can. Now that Petra is the famed Warrior of Light, Mydia is simply proud of her sister and all that she's accomplished. Both girls only want for the other to succeed and be happy.
      • Petra calls her 'Myds' as a nickname
  • Siat Rehw-Marouc (ROG)
    • Petra's younger brother by 4 years. The pair had a typical younger brother-older sister dynamic for quite a while - Petra was constantly annoyed by Siat and his antics, while Siat simply wanted to be included (but bothering his sister was a plus sometimes). Though she didn't know it, Siat looked up to Petra as being what he wanted to be when he was older; an adventurous person determined to forge her own path and follow her heart rather than the Green Word. He was incredibly bitter when she chose to leave the village, out of jealousy that he was never gutsy enough to do the same. Petra holds no resentment towards her brother and how he feels about her. She hopes that of any family member that he'd be one of the most likely to reconcile.
  • Rena Atoel (WHM)
    • 7 years younger than Petra. Of the bunch Rena is the most soft-spoken and sensitive, and teased in the village as a crybaby. She's always had a special place in Petra's heart, evidenced by Rena receiving a few letters from Petra after her departure (though not as many as Mydia). Rena and Petra learned about botany together and enjoyed going to the local town for snacks. She was heartbroken when Petra left and misses her sister dearly.

Future Family

  • Silvain de Borel (PLD)
    • Petra's eldest son. Completely an accident and the reason she left Tural for an extended period of time. He spent a portion of his teenage years adventuring with Petra before ultimately deciding to stay in Ishgard and become a Paladin and Temple Knight. Taking after his father, Silvain is dutiful and wishes to help create a better Ishgard for the future. Unbeknownst to both of his parents (but not his brother), Silvain also possesses a Dark Knight job stone after blaming himself for failing to protect one of his fellow knight trainees during what was supposed to be a routine training exercise.
  • Kieran de Borel (RDM)
    • Petra's second son, and 5 years younger than Silvain. Adventurous like his mother, he trained in multiple classes and jobs before eventually settling on Red Mage - though he is also a talented Sage in the off chance a healer is needed. Once he's old enough to travel with his own adventurer's party, he chooses to do so and continues his mother's legacy of monster slaying and good deeds. Kieran doesn't visit home in Ishgard very often but when he does he's welcomed by his parents and brother with open arms.

Mounts & Minions

* Malau

  • Petra's beloved and most trusted Chocobo. Silvery ash gray in color, he is typically seen wearing Ixion, Titania, or Ishgardian Half-Barding. Having been one of Petra's closest animal companions and battlefield allies, he and Petra are bonded at the deepest level.
    • One of Petra's favorite things about Malau is that he has a tendency to trill and chirp rather than squawk like a typical Chocobo. His favorite thing about her is that she very likely to give him treats if he just begs enough
  • Frel
    • Petra's black Ishgardian Chocobo, received as a gift from Haurchefant. Unlike Malau, Frel is a bit more aggressive in her behavior, leading to her staying behind at the chocobo stables more often than not during Petra's adventures. However, Petra found Frel's natural resistance to the cold invaluable and used her as a mount during her time in Ishgard and Garlemald.

Opera AU

  • Non-WoL!Petra AU in which rather than recruited by the Order of the Twin Adder, Petra is instead taken in and trained by an opera company in singing and (to a lesser extent) ballet. She makes her debut as an ingénue lead in the Ishgardian opera after the company diva falls ill - earning the intrigue and fascination of the Ishgardian nobles and commoners alike as a rarely seen Viera with exceptional talent.
