FFXIV Swap FAQ

What is FFXIV Swap?

FFXIV Swap is a digital gift swap run here on discord! Participants will be assigned someone to make a gift for, featuring that person’s FFXIV OC, and in return they also get a gift made of their OC! The idea is to spread the love and joy of creating and of sharing our characters with each other.

What gifts are allowed?

Pretty much anything, so long as it’s made by you and features your giftee’s FFXIV OC. We’ve had everything from gpose and writing and art to poetry and recipes and playing cards, and even physical items!

How often do swaps happen?

Swaps typically run quarterly, with two months of swap and a one month break in between. Dawntrail is going to throw a bit of a wrench in that plan, but we’ll figure that out as we go.

Do I have to participate in every swap?

No! You don’t even have to participate in any to be here, we value our community just as much as our swappers. You can participate in some or none or every single one!

Are there deadlines?

Yes, each swap has a roughly two-month deadline. If you need an extension, please let a mod know ASAP. The deadlines are there to help and guide you, not to hinder you.

Are the themes mandatory?

Nope! They’re simply there to help guide you if you can’t come up with any other ideas.

How are the pairings done? Are they secret?

While the pairings are done Secret Santa-style (in that the person you get assigned to make a gift for isn’t the person assigned to make you a gift), they are not kept secret! This is due to the deep nature of OCs and the reliance many of us have on communication to make the gifts we make. All participant’s names are put into a generator and then moved to a spreadsheet that is posted publicly for all swappers to see. Care is taken to ensure that participants aren’t paired with anyone they’ve had before, and to ensure that no one is making a gift for their own gifter.

What OC info do I need prior to signing up?

While it’s not required to have everything sorted prior to signing up, it’s highly encouraged to have concise and easy to access OC information at the ready! For example, I have a two-page document for each of my OCs, plus front and back reference images of my favorite outfits, plus multiple .chara and .mcdf files and a mod list ready to go, and I would encourage others to have something roughly the same! If you don’t mod, a .dat file can suffice if paired with a list of the exact gear and dyes your OC wears, or someone who does mod can meet you in game and save a .chara file for you!
