General
Emix is a conjurer at heart who found the adventuring life thrust upon him by Hydaelyn Herself. He is generally reserved and a bit anxious—not the type you'd expect to be responsible the preservation of the Star, but surely the Mothercrystal must know what she's doing. A lifelong resident of the Black Shroud, he greatly reveres nature and the Elementals. Although that comes with a respect for all life, he also understands that balance sometimes includes death.
History
Pre-MSQ
Emix was discovered as a baby by a Hearer of the Conjurers' Guild not far from the Guardian Tree, covered in leaves and branches in a way that appeared like natural swaddling. He was unscathed and sleeping soundly, as if lulled by the sounds of the forest. When she could find no family nearby, the Hearer took him back to the guild, believing him to be either a gift from the Elementals, or innately deeply connected to them—either way, he would need a home, and training. He was raised by the guild as a whole, with Brother E-Sumi-Yan as his foremost mentor.
He took to conjury naturally, though he never let his ambitions get ahead of him, preferring to take things slow and sit in meditation as long as seemed necessary. In the years following the Calamity, however, he became more acutely aware of, and bothered by, the forest's suffering. With the blessing of his superiors, he decided that it was time to venture into the field and take a more hands-on approach to restoring balance.
A Realm Reborn
Goes largely according to canon. They are surprised to be called by Hydaelyn, but they can rationalize it easily enough: they have spent their life heeding the will of the Elementals, and now, as they head out into the world to address the damage caused by the Calamity, it is time to heed the will of the Star as a whole.
They take well to the Scions, and to Urianger in particular. Emix has always been the patient sort, and thus never found cause to interrupt or rush him through his long-winded speeches. On the contrary, they like hearing him talk about whatever is of import or interest at the moment, as well as being able to engage in friendship without having to do much of the talking. The two quickly grow close, but while rumors may fly among their colleagues, their closeness remains platonic for the time being.
Still, Urianger is the first to notice Emix's plight after the sacking of the Waking Sands and the events of Castrum Centri, and confronts them after they throw themself on the frontlines in what looks to be a manifestation of survivor's guilt.1) They had taken up the way of the Paladin under the belief that Hydaelyn had warned them that reaction, in the form of healing, was not always going to be enough. Despite assurances that it is not their sole responsibility to take damage so that others might not, they continue to study the discipline, ostensibly with the hope of finding a healthy balance.
While the dust of Operation Archon is settling, they join the Botanists' Guild. They have always had a passive interest in plants, being forestborn (as far as they can tell) and a conjurer, but they decide that it is time to make that an active interest, especially given that their travels have taken them far beyond the Black Shroud, and they would like to understand more than what they have grown up with.
Around the time that Ramuh is summoned and subsequently defeated, the teasing of Emix and Urianger from the rest of the Scions boils over, and the two finally admit their feelings for one another and begin a romantic relationship.2)
Emix is greatly shaken when Midgardsormr removes their Blessing of Light.3) They had grown accustomed to “feeling” Hydaelyn's presence like they did the Elementals when they lived in the Twelveswood, and to be without either of them was upsetting.
Heavensward
Goes largely according to canon. As the Blessing of Light is slowly restored, Emix clings to the Light for dear life. While he mostly uses it to augment his Paladin abilities, it also seeps into his White magic, replacing his Stone spell with a Glare of light. This is even more apparent after Haurchefant's death: Emix had been trying to take Urianger's advice and not feel responsible for standing between others and danger, and look what happened. He hardly sets his shield down for the rest of the arc. Before leaving for Azys Lla, he has a chance to see Urianger, who notices that he is cold to the touch.4) This concerns Urianger, but he ultimately lets it go.
After meeting the Warriors of Darkness, however, Y'shtola also notices that what she assumed was the Blessing of Light was actually a surfeit of Light-aspected aether flowing through Emix. She talks to Urianger about it, and the two decide that simply asking Emix to let go of some of the Light would not be useful, and so they instead urge him to pick up disciplines that are more aligned with Darkness. They start by trying to teach him thaumaturgy, but he struggles to pick it up, so they decide to put that on the backburner and instead look into the rumors they have heard about a faction of Garlean defectors who reach into the Void to augment their abilities, thinking that that will be a solid way to balance out the Light. Emix agrees with great trepidation to give it a try.
Stormblood
Goes largely according to canon. Emix takes to Reaper well enough and continues to slowly learn Black magic on the side, though they are not happy about not being “allowed” to act as a healer or protector. This is augmented by Zenos's comments that they are the same—no one involved in this war has ever seen them doing anything but frontline offense, so he might as well be right.
Shadowbringers
When the Calls start to come, Emix grows even more frustrated that their hands are so tied. This comes to a head when Urianger is taken and Emix decides that trying to help is worth the any consequences that could come from him using White magic. Having seen already standard White magic fail, however, he pulls aether from the Mothercrystal, rather than from the world around them, and basically attempts an LB3 alone. This would be catastrophic, were he not interrupted by Y'shtola, and then by the Call that took her too.
From then until his own trip to the First, he begins using his Light-focused skills again, in what he hopes in moderation. When he arrives on the First, however, he is sobered upon realizing what was at stake all along. He decides that he will stick to Black magic as much as possible for now.

Trivia
- The magic that Emix wields as a Paladin is drawn from the Star in the same way that Conjury is drawn from the surrounding world.
- Emix does not find botany to be contradictory to his reverence for nature: he knows that there is an ebb and flow to all things.
