History

Due to Laurent's age, much of his story is split into several arcs with their own names. He also doesn't officially enter MSQ until post-Stormblood patches.

Pre-MSQ

Golmore Prelude
Reyna was born in a small village in a very remote part of Golmore Jungle. He didn't know his parents–in the village, everyone worked together to raise the kits, and traditional familial bonds were not made. The only other Viera at his age was Eir, and they became fast friends.

When Eir and Reyna came of age and learned they were male, they were taken by one of the males in the village to learn to be a Wood Warder. Reyna took to the training well, becoming one of the better Wood Warders in recent memory. When training was complete, the village happily bestowed upon him the title of Rehw-Bidit, Wood Warder of the Earthly Wind.

As such, Reyna protected the forest for decades, though he did try to spend as much time with Eir as possible, as he was worried about what may happen to him in the jungle. One day, intruders came into the forest and happened upon them. In a moment of weakness, Eir lets one of the younger soldiers go–strictly against the laws of the village.

Reyna, sensing this would give the elders an excuse to dispatch Eir, takes blame for the incident and is exiled from the village. Unsure of where to go, he heads to the only place he knows about outside of the jungle–Rabanastre.

Dalmascan Requiem

Upon making it to Rabanastre, Reyna takes a city name–Laurent–and tries to find work in a land he was unfamiliar with. It took him a while to get a handle on Dalmascan culture, and eventually falls into being a mercenary, though it earned him some enemies along the way.

During this time, Laurent meets Gemna, an elderly Bangaa bartender, and she helps him with getting acclimated in Dalmasca and finding (marginally) safer mercenary work. It was also during this time that Laurent realized the feelings for his friend were more than platonic, but he made peace with the fact that, by being exiled from the jungle, he'd never see him again.

However, after five years, Eir reappears in Laurent's life. Having taken the city name Gale, he didn't know his friend was searching for him, thinking Gale was someone looking to settle a debt instead. Regardless, he was ecstatic to see him again, even if he cursed inadvertently avoiding him all these years.

Finally reunited, Gale offers Laurent a new job, one better suited for his abilities–becoming an assassin. Wood Warder training lent well to the profession, and being more in the shadows would keep him from making as many enemies… and Gale's wealth of information meant there was no shortage of targets.

Seeing as mercenary work only seemed a step away from assassination most of the time anyway, Laurent agrees, and Gemna takes both of them under her wing and mentors them in the ways of espionage. The two Viera made a good team, and they were able to carve out a good living in the underbelly of Rabanastre.

Laurent kept his feeling for Gale secret for a time, worried about scaring him off and losing him again. However, after a drunken night leaving an air of tension between them, he finally confessed and the feelings were reciprocated.

After about a decade, Gemna passes peacefully of old age, and the boys decide to take over running the bar, leaving the assassin life behind. But it doesn't take long to learn the truth about their late mentor–that she was a member of the Saraab, a unit of Dalmascan peacekeepers that work in the shadows to keep the kingdom safe, via any means necessary.

Upon learning this, the two agree to join the Saraab, and assist when necessary in exchange for their past crimes being forgiven.

As such, their lives continued in this way, gathering information for the Saraab and occasionally taking jobs from them, until the Garleans invaded.
