Varrus Varlineau is an Ishgardian-born Elezen and the Warrior of Light. Though a legend to most, those who know him personally know him to be a lighthearted, carefree goofball who adores his friends and family and strives to live a good life. He is married to his fellow Warrior of Light and dragoon Jess Varlineau, and the younger cousin of Estinien Varlineau.

Varrus was born to Marienne and Vaillont Varlineau in the small farming village of Ferndale, situated in eastern Coerthas. His mother was Gridanian, but moved to Ishgard after meeting his father, a lifelong dragoon. His father brought her to his family’s farmstead in Ferndale, where his brother lived with his own wife and child. Marienne gave birth to their eldest, a daughter by the name of Valissa, and, five years later, gave birth to a son, Varrus. Vaillont was often gone on his dragoon duties, leaving Marienne, Valissa and Varrus on the farm along with his brother and brother’s wife, and their two sons, Estinien and Hamignant.

When Varrus was seven years old, his hometown was set upon by a massive, black wyrm, burning every structure to the ground and killing all its inhabitants. Only he, his mother, his sister and his eldest cousin managed to survive, having been out tending the karakul that day. That evening, Varrus experienced his first Echo vision, and heard Hydaelyn’s call. He informed his mother of the voice during the aftermath, who, out of concern for her son, took him to the Holy See. The priests interpreted his visions as being a gift from Halone, and attempted to take the boy into their custody, but Marienne refused, and instead took her family and moved to her former home of Gridania. She tried to take Estinien, but the older boy stayed behind, insisting on training as a dragoon to avenge his family.

At fifteen, Varrus returned to Ishgard to train as a dragoon alongside his cousin - only to find Estinien was no longer the boy he’d grown up with, and that his memories of his homeland were a far cry from the truth. He stayed for six years, until he left and returned to his family in Gridania, joining the Twin Adders to make a living.
